Ithala Game Reserve
Ithala Game Reserve
Ithala Game Reserve, tumbling from the heights of the Ngotshe Mountains a thousand meters down into the deep Phongolo River valley, is a game viewer’s paradise. Its rugged terrain, carved over eons, reveals some of the world’s oldest rock formations dating back 3,000 million years.
The reserve’s topography ranges from 400m above sea level in the north to 1,450m near Louwsburg in the south, creating a mosaic of habitats from lowveld and densely vegetated riverine valleys to high grassland plateaus, ridges, and cliffs. Evidence of human habitation spans thousands of years, from Stone Age tools dating back 200,000 years to Iron Age smelting sites from the Nguni people.
Ithala has witnessed significant historical events — from the reign of Shaka Zulu to early 20th-century gold mining. Today, it offers an outstanding network of self-drive and guided trails, supported by Ntshondwe Camp, a multi-award-winning main camp offering a range of accommodation and amenities.
